The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) joined key healthcare stakeholders in a comprehensive medical camp held at Maralal DEB Comprehensive School in Samburu County, reaffirming its commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and advancing community well-being.
The KMA delegation was led by President Dr. Ibrahim Matende and the Convener of the KMA Social Responsibility and Welfare Committee, Dr. Bonnke Reinhard Arunga, who joined the Chief Executive Officer of the Digital Health Agency, Eng. Anthony Lenaiyara, the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority, Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, the Chief Executive Officer of Kenyatta National Hospital, Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, together with senior officials from the County Government of Samburu.
The medical camp brought together healthcare professionals from various disciplines to provide a wide range of essential health services to residents of Samburu County. Patients benefited from consultations, specialist clinics, diagnostic screening, treatment, health education, and referrals where necessary, underscoring the value of collaborative efforts in expanding access to healthcare services in underserved communities.
Significant Community Impact
The outreach recorded an impressive turnout, demonstrating the critical need for accessible healthcare services in the region. The outcomes underscore the effectiveness of community-based outreach programmes in identifying health conditions early, linking patients to appropriate care, and expanding access to essential health services.
Speaking during the outreach, KMA President Dr. Ibrahim Matende encouraged members of the community to take advantage of the services offered by Community Health Workers (CHWs) by actively seeking regular health checks, particularly those living in remote villages where access to healthcare remains a challenge. He noted that preventive healthcare and early health-seeking behaviour are critical in improving health outcomes and reducing the burden of disease.
Dr. Matende further announced that, in partnership with the Social Health Authority (SHA), the Kenya Medical Association plans to roll out similar medical camps across the country. The initiative aims to reach underserved and vulnerable populations with limited or no access to healthcare services, ensuring that more Kenyans can benefit from quality medical care regardless of their location.
He also emphasized the importance of enrolling in the Social Health Authority (SHA), urging all eligible Kenyans to register and take advantage of the health coverage provided under the national scheme. He noted that widespread registration is essential to achieving equitable access to healthcare and advancing Kenya's Universal Health Coverage agenda.
The medical camp was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Social Health Authority (SHA), the Digital Health Agency (DHA), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), the County Government of Samburu, the Kenya Medical Association, and other partners, reflecting a shared commitment to improving healthcare access and promoting healthier communities.
